East Stadium ADU

East Stadium ADU is a home and studio designed for a retiring art historian. Attached but independent of a small 2-bedroom house built in the 70s, the strategy of a new accessory structure was chosen to allow for the next generation of family to move into the existing house while creating a new vessel for repose and creative contemplation.

By siting the structure to split the former backyard in twain, it creates a shared courtyard preceding a sheltered front porch as well as a private garden for the ADU, creating a new sequence of intimate outdoor spaces and preserving existing mature trees at the corners of the property.

The ADU occupies a footprint of under 600 square feet, composed of as a pair of diurnal volumes, one open and one private: the living room, library and studio space for work during the day, and a bedroom-study perched atop kitchen and bath. Each volume has its own visual and ambulatory connection to the outside with a covered threshold, the borrowed and lived landscape becoming integral to the architectural space.
